NON SERVICE CONNECTED BENEFITS

"AID AND ATTENDANCE" is available to a veteran who requires the aid and attendance of another person in order to avoid the HAZARDS OF HIS/HER DAILY ENVIRONMENT.

Under this benefit, a veteran can receive a maximum of $2019 per month in benefits, and a widow/er can receive up to $1094 per month, TAX-FREE. A single Veteran is $1703 per month.

SERVICE REQUIREMENTS:  In general, to qualify, a veteran must have 90 days or more of active duty.  Under other than dishonorable conditions, one day of which was during wartime.  One does not have to be in country to qualify,  and 65 or disabled.   (wartime periods see below).

NET WORTH REQUIREMENTS.  The DVA (Department of Veterans Affairs ) will consider the net worth of the applicant and will deny the application if the net worth is such that part of it could be consumed for the applicants care.  Income and Net Worth need to be evaluated on an individual basis.   The home and car are not counted. This should be evaluated with us.

THERE  IS NO PENALTY FOR TRANSFER OF ASSETS.  The application simply asks for the net worth of the applicant on the date of the application, and does not inquire as to previous transfers. Again this should be evaluated on an individual basis with us.

UNREIMBURSED MEDICAL EXPENSES:  Doctors fees, dentist, glasses, medicare deductions, co-payments, prescriptions,transporation to doctors,therapy, health insurance, and funeral expenses can make up a big portion of the unreimbursed medical expenses.  Also included in unreimbursed medical expenses are the costs of an assisted living facility or in home health care. Obviously , these can make up a big portion of the unreimbursed medical expenses.

WHAT COUNTS AS "WARTIME"

     World War II   -     December 7, 1941 through December 31, 1946

     Korean Conflict - June 27, 1950  through January 31, 1955

     Vietnam Era - August 5, 1964 (February 28, 1961 for Veterans who served " in country" before Aug 5, 1964) through May 7, 1975

    Persian Gulf War - Aug 2, 1990 through a date to be set by law  or Presidential Proclamation .

                  SPECIAL EXTRA EARNINGS FOR MILITARY SERVICE FROM SOCIAL SECURITY

The information that follows applies only to ACTIVE DUTY military service earnings from 1957 THROUGH 2001.  Here's how the special EXTRA earnings are credited on your record:

Service in 1957 through 1977:  You are credited with $300 in additional earnings for each calendar quarter in which you received active duty basic pay.

Service in 1978 through 2001:  For every $300 in active duty basic pay, you are credited with an additional $100 in earnings up to a maximum of $1200 a year.
